EDCI-528 Kim Barnes Presentation

Presentation Summary

Kim Barnes holds a master's degree in human development and began her career as a special education teacher. Now she is the CEO of Barnes & Conti Associates, Inc of Berkeley, and independent leadership development firm.  She has more than 35 years of experience in consulting roles with a variety of organizations in multiple industries. Ms. Barnes has also written a number of non-fiction books, as well as a fictional corporate mystery.

Ms. Barnes presented some compelling information about exercising influence, or as she said, "moving your ideas into action through others". She elaborated on a variety of topics related to influence including the elements of influence, Neuroscience, Influence Tactics, etc.

I found the information related to Neuroscience very interesting and tied in well with her discussion about relationships. It had never occurred to me to consider science in the factors that may influence HPT, but it makes perfect sense. Using a non-threatening approach will help allow people to be more open to your ideas. Likewise, finding common ground and goals can also increase your influence. Sharing the benefits of your idea to the person your trying to influence can also be helpful. Looking at things from the other person's perspective and being credible are also ways to increase your influence. I find that the neuroscience all ties in with her belief in treating others with respect and offering them a choice. Relationships (and knowing your Neuroscience) are really key to successful influencing!

I also found her Influence Tactics portion of the presentation to be very helpful.

The graphic helped me understand these tactics better. In fact, I am reading a book entitled Tactics that also discusses some of the receptive tactics Kim discussed, such as asking questions. In my experience, it seems like I usually see people using more expressive tactics such as telling or selling ideas. I feel like I used the negotiate tactic a lot when I was a classroom teacher. For example, offer incentives for achieving certain learning goals.

Personal Reflection

I found the tactics information of the presentation to be very interesting and relevant to the Surf N' Turf Case Study we're working on since we're developing plans to improve the franchise. I found the connections between our coursework to be surprising. I hadn't ever considered this topic in relation to HPT.

While I liked the presentation, I don't think this field is for me. I'm an introvert by nature so the idea of interacting with a large number of unfamiliar people and/or presenting in front of crowds leaves me cold... or anxious may be a more apt description.
